About Yisroel Schulman

Yisroel Schulman graduated from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1987.  From 1987 through 1990, Mr. Schulman was a member of the full-time faculty of law at Cardozo. Mr. Schulman is the recipient of many awards, including the New York State Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Public Service in the Legal Profession and the inaugural winner of Cardozo’s Alumni Achievement Award.   He is a much sought after speaker and has taught hundreds of non-profit executives and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses to thousands of attorneys. 

 

In 1990, Mr. Schulman co-founded the New York Legal Assistance Group ("NYLAG"), a non-profit law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals. At NYLAG,  Mr. Schulman held the top professional position, first titled "Executive Director and Attorney-in-Charge"  and later titled "President and Attorney-in-Charge".  In this capacity, Mr. Schulman oversaw all operations of NYLAG.  During his tenure, NYLAG's budget grew to over $40,000,000 and from one paid staff member to a paid staff of over 250, with more than 500 volunteers, working out of 35 plus locations throughout New York. In 2015 NYLAG provided free civil legal services to over 75,000 individuals and handled class action and other impact and law reform cases benefiting hundreds of thousands of low income people.  See www.nylag.org.

 

With the backing of NYLAG’s then Board, Mr. Schulman was involved in the innovation of numerous models of pro bono programs for low-income New Yorkers that have been adopted throughout the State including, the most recent use of non-lawyer volunteers to provide limited scope legal services under attorney supervision. Mr. Schulman also conceptualized the Mobile Legal Help Centers, a successful joint initiative between the New York State Office of Court Administration and legal services programs. Additionally, he was involved in creating NYLAG’s September 11th Response Team which assisted the majority of the families of immediate victims of the World Trade Center disaster and the Superstorm Sandy Relief Program, the State’s largest legal services initiative for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

 

In 2015, Mr. Schulman resigned from NYLAG and founded the Schulman Law Group which provides legal services to individuals and corporations in a variety of areas.
